History of the Department:

The Department of History was founded in 1962. Its establishment precedes the founding of Bangalore University, by two years. Established under the auspices of the University of Mysore, the Department was for long located at the Central College campus till 1974. Subsequently it was shifted to the Jnana Bharathi Campus. The Department has the honour of having eminent scholars like, Prof Hamid, Prof K.Narasaiah, Prof K.T. Ramaswamy, Prof K.Veerathappa, Prof S.U. Kamat and Prof H.V. Srinivasamurthy.  Dr. K. Narasaiah and Dr. K. Veerathappa were also Fulbright scholars. Dr. S. Chandrashekar is the recipient of the Karnataka Sahithya Academy Award & the UGC Career Award. Credit goes to the Department in the founding of the Karnataka History Congress.

The Department has undertaken Research projects funded by UGC/ICHR/Government of Karnataka and other agencies. Particularly the UGC has sanctioned SAP-DRS-1 in July 2009 to the Department with the themes: 1. Environment & Water Resource Management in Karnataka and 2. Daliths in Rural Karnataka.  The total amount sanctioned both non-recurring and recurring is Rs. 49.50.000/- + two project fellows (actual).

The Department has organized/conducted several Seminars/ conferences
