History of the Centre

Many women academics of the Bangalore University have long been engaged in studies pertaining to important issues of women.  With the impetus given to the subject of Women’s Studies by the UGC and the scope for such studies in this regard, it was felt necessary to set up a study centre in the Bangalore University.  No sooner did the University have the approval of the Commission for the setting up of a Women’s Studies centre, the University set in motion a series of official actions in the direction of setting up the Centre.  The first of these was the constitution of an Advisory Committee and a Standing Committee, with luminaries drawn from relevant backgrounds.  The Women’s Studies Centre came into being at the Bangalore University as part of the activities of the Ninth Five Year Plan.  The Centre was formally inaugurated on 17 February 2001, by Dr.Hari Gautam, Chairman of the University Grants Commission. The Centre was started under the aegis of the UGC by the then Vice Chancellor Dr K.Siddappa.  The main activities of the Centre are teaching, research, extension, documentation and advocacy.
