Brief History

Dept. of Psychology was established in the year 1974 with two specializations i.e., Clinical and Industrial Psychology. Prof. N.C.S. Rao was the first Chairperson of the Department. Dr. M.S. Thimmappa who served the department as Professor and Chairman, became the Registrar and also the Vice Chancellor of our esteemed University. In the year 1994, Dept. of Psychology attained the status of faculty of science and also introduced one more specialization-Child guidance. In the year 2000, the department introduced a new self-financing course-M.Sc. Holistic Psychological Counselling. The department is proud to have a unique and separate building with a 'Psi' logo. Department shifted to the said new building in the year 2006. In the year 2014, when the university introduced open elective paper, our department had the maximum and enrolment of 182 students from various departments. Sigmund Freud's (founder of Psycho Analysis) statue was installed and unveiled on 6 May, 2016 on the occasion of his 160 birthdays.

MISSION

To involve in research and extension activities with the objectives of enhancing quality in Higher Education, Popularize the subject of psychology and to promote psychological wellbeing.

M.Sc Psychology (Two-year course) 4 Semesters

Department of Psychology offering MSc Psychology with three specializations

Eligibility Criteria: Candidates with 40% marks in aggregate. 50% of marks in the cognate subject at the Bachelor’s Degree level.

M.Sc Psychological Counselling (Two-year course) 4 Semesters

Eligibility Criteria: 50% marks in BA/B.Sc degree having studied Psychology at the graduate level/ B.Ed/ PG Diploma in counselling with 50% marks in aggregate. P.G. Diploma in Psychological Counselling. A Graduate of Bangalore University or any other recognized University in India having studied in a regular

Course. Any one of the following optional subjects viz., Psychology/Sociology/Social-Work/ Home Science/Human Resource Development (Management)/B.Ed., or a Graduate in any discipline of Rehabilitation Science-A Doctor (from any Medical Faculty such as Allopathy/Ayurveda/Unani) Paramedical rehabilitation, Nursing Physiotherapist, Speech Therapist, Audiologist with 50% marks in aggregate (including languages) are eligible.

PG Diploma in Psychological Counselling (1 Year) 2 Semesters

Eligibility Criteria: 50% marks in BA/B.Sc degree having studied Psychology at the graduate level/ B.Ed/ PG Diploma in counselling with 50% marks in aggregate. P.G. Ph.D Programme (Part time -04 years & Full time -03 years)

Eligibility Criteria: 2 Years of Post-graduation in Psychology or Psychological Counselling.

 

Faculty contribution for change of curriculum as BOS members

New syllabi (CBCS) was introduced in the year 2020. Inputs were taken from faculty members of other universities and affiliated institutions while framing the syllabi. Ph.D. Course work was introduced in the year 2013-2014. Course pertaining to skill development Project and dissertation work was introduced for II & IV Semester from 2014. Internship in Clinical / Organizational Psychology/Child guidance. Was made mandatory as it facilitates students for their higher studies and for their vocation as well.

Classrooms are fully equipped. The department is proud to have an independent Library with adequate number of books (more than 2000), journals and other learning materials. The department enjoys an independent Auditorium with a seating capacity of 200. The department also has a student lounge to cater to extra-curricular activities. Laboratories are well equipped. All the staff rooms are well equipped with internet connection. Student Support & Progression Currently 21 research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. program in the department. Extends support for placements to the deserving candidates 281 individuals received various counselling support. Alumni association has been formed. A large number of students have cleared UGC-NET and K-SET successfully. Some of the students have also joined civil services other than careers in academics, hospitals, educational and organizational fields.

 

Eco-Friendly Initiatives:

 

Students participated in the yearlong Eco therapy program for special children aimed at enhancing socio-cognitive functions of special children. The program was sponsored by Department of Geology, Bangalore University & Bangalore Environmental Trust. Students from/pot Semester M.Sc Psychology and Diploma in Psychological Counselling are actively participating in the program and extended their services to the society. Saplings have been planted and maintained by the staff and students of the department.
